New on the blog In the exhibition "The Presence of Absence, of the Catastrophe Theory", curator Cathryn Drake @cathryndrake explores how the geopolitical events following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire some 100 years ago still resonate today. It was a pleasure writing about this heartbreaking show, and I wish I could expand more on its themes and contents. You can read my review on und-athens.com. The video is from the ongoing project "The Phenomenal Present" by Adonis Archontides @ragnanox, one of the ten artists participating in "The Presence of Absence".

I'm very excited to share with you a detail from this new installation by Vasilis Botoulas, to be presented for the first time as part of my exhibition "The Vision of Saint Void" opening in Athens next week. For this work, Vasilis has collected driftwood and rock from a beach on the east coast of Attica, and created an installation that reminds of an archaeologist's working table or the forensics room in a police department. I chose this work for the exhibition because it deals with an aspect of the void that relates to memory and psychological/emotional distance. The artist collects objects together with his lover and partner, then organises them and makes meticulous drawings of them, as if trying to fill the gap that memories leave behind as they dissipate. The most heartbreaking moment in the 15th Istanbul Biennial is the video "Wonderland" (2016) by Turkish photographer Erkan Özgen. The short video shows a young boy from Kobani, Northern Syria, who escaped the horrors of the war there and the 2015 attack by ISIS. The boy is deaf-mute, and reenacts with pantomime on camera the executions and torture he has witnessed.
